As much as you want to believe people are all the same, we don’t have the luxury of being seen as the “default” in the same way white, straight, cis people often are. We don’t have the luxury of dismissing our painful history and systemic issues for the sake of everyone getting along, because we’re still in the middle of them.

In a culture focused on the importance and superiority of romantic attraction and relationships — a culture aromantics might call alloromantic-centric — platonic friendships (another form of relationship) are consistently undervalued.

If you tune in to the Democratic National Convention today, you’ll see history being made. No, not the nomination of the first female candidate for a major party. You’ll see the first appearance of an out transgender person at a major party convention.
