Avey Tare, guitarist and lead singer for Animal Collective, has started a brand new band not-so-cleverly dubbed Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks, featuring former Dirty Projectors keyboardist and singer Angel Deradoorian alongside Ponytail drummer Jeremy Hyman.
With a band name like “Slasher Flicks,” complete with a tripped-out website asking visitors to "Enter the Slasher House," flanked by nothing short of disturbing photos (masks and knives anyone?!) you would expect to hear something out of the movie Psycho—dissonant shrieking chords or at least a gutteral scream or two—but in fact, it's quite the opposite. Their "we're comin' to get you" visage is belied by their quite bouncy, layered vocals awash in synthy bell-pads and strange bubbling noises; there's nary a slash in sight.
Each of the members bring their own quintessential flavor to the mix, but together their sound feels decidedly new.
