Courtney: LGBTQ Advocate, Feline Film Buff

Spotted at: Jack of All Trades Art Fair—Oakland, CA
Occupation: Employment Services at the LGBTQ Center in San Francisco

That’s an amazing shirt! What’s the story behind it?
Thanks! I’m going to a cat film festival after this so it’s a perfect time to wear it! I can’t wear it all the time—it’s like a Christmas sweater.

Even though you have that awesome shirt on today, how would you describe your usual style?
Pretty much however I feel: earthy, comfortable and enhancing.

Fantastic! What about your hair? What made you want purple in it?
I feel like purple is my natural hair color. It reflects my spirit.

A Purple Spirit! Very cool! Are you from the Bay Area?
Yep! Born and Raised in San Francisco!

And you work in the city at the LGBTQ Center? What do you do there?
I do a lot of case management and help folks with job searches.

What are your thoughts on feminism in our culture?
Any place where women can have a voice in the media is so important! I actually just finished a book and gave it to a guy friend: it’s called Feminism is for Everybody by bell hooks.

Thanks for the recommendation! Clearly, you’re a reader, what are you reading now?
I actually have a book with me [Sum: Forty Tales From the Afterlives by David Eagleman]. It’s a bunch of short stories about the afterlife.

Your tattoo sleeve is amazing. How long did it take to do?
About a year now. We just finished it! I’m about to start a large piece on my leg!

Wow! Do you have any other hobbies?
I love plant stuff! I make terrarium necklaces [I want one of those!].

I have a website, terrariumtherapy.com, but since I started working a lot more I haven’t been updating it as much. But check out my Instagram: @terrariumtherapy. It’s a lot more up to date and it shows the stuff I make.

What's the most interesting thing you've learned recently . . . any pressing thoughts that have been plaguing you?
Since I have been working a lot with trans folks, I have been thinking about trying to provide services to the youth and how to support the LGBTQ community better. I have also really been thinking about how race as a social construct impacts the way we have access to the world and what the world has to offer us.
