Mod Squad: Get a Head Start On Fall’s Must-Have 60s Trend

I know what you’re thinking: “Dude, it’s not even August,” but it’s never too early to get a head start on fall trends, especially one that lends itself so seamlessly to summer.

Fall is all about 60s mod. From Gucci’s shift dresses and patent heels to Valentino’s pop-art prints and Miu Miu’s barely there mini skirts, the swinging 60s are in full swing for fall. And while we don’t necessarily recommend you whip out your go-go boots or sport a full Twiggy eyelash moment to work, we do think you should add a surge of the trend into your everyday wardrobe. Close out your summer with our oh-so-easy styling tips.

The Low Heel Mary-Jane

Hedi Slimane showed a similar gold style on the Saint Laurent runways, but his version is $845. (Avert your eyes.) Topshop’s version gives you the much-coveted without the guilt; at $75, you won’t feel bad if you only wear them six times. Buy them now and pair them with denim cut-offs and a fitted crew-neck tee.

The Structured Backpack

Didn’t you know? Lilac is the color for fall, but as an untraditionally fall color, it’s easy to work into summer’s lighter palettes. Pick up this butter soft leather backpack and wear it with a shift dress and sandals while the weather’s hot. Bust out a camel pea coat and jeans when temperatures start to drop.

The Nautical Tee

Sophisticated, but never frumpy or post-40, the nautical tee is the trademark of mod. Wear it to the office this summer with black ankle pants and ballet flats (you’ll look just like Audrey Hepburn). For fall, team it with a mini skirt, some black opaque tights and a pair of flat, knee-high boots.

The Buttoned Mini

What could be more mod—and demurely sexy—than a high-waisted, button-up mini skirt. Sure, the blinding white color screams summertime, but team it up with a fine rib turtleneck and some Mary-Janes and you’ve got 60s gold.

Thick Aviators

These bad boys showed up on the Gucci runway this spring and instantly became the must-have item. We love Ray-Ban’s black and tan version, but look for pastel lenses mixed with deep, jewel-toned frames. Mod perfection.
