Why We're Gushing Over Gia, the Latest Coppola "It Girl"

Rivers of ink have been spilled over Sofia Coppola's impeccable style. Look, she's wearing pajamas on the red carpet (but it's by Marc Jacobs)! How can she wear so much black and still be the most interesting person in the room? Ah, there's that Luis Vuitton magic again!

Coppola, whose wardrobe is on display again due to her role as a Cannes Festival jury member, has inspired countless young fashionistas to rock dark ruby lipstick and minimalistic bobs. Every little thing she does (yes, even the half-baked Bling Ring) is magic. And we're not ashamed of this Police reference—Coppola would totally understand.

But every icon needs a protégé, or at least a worthy imitator. Enter Gia Coppola, Sofia's niece, a talented movie director in her own right, and fashion's latest It Girl.

Ode to Gia

At the ripe young age of 27, Gia has already cemented herself as an expert on teenage angst—her debut film, Palo Alto, is based on James Franco's story of growing up in the Californian town, and has won raves for its sensitive portrayal of the dreaded teen years.

Following in the footsteps of her aunt, she is also a fashion icon in the making. With her tall and lanky stature, quite different from Sofia's petite frame, Gia has mastered some key looks: the button-up shirt under a preppy sweater, the white tuxedo suit (and suits in general), the simple A-line mini dress paired with killer heels.

Gia's hairdo, of course, is an understated, "did it myself" style of bob, and her skin is luminous and touched by with what seems to be the world's best genes.

Um, yeah. Did we mention we love her?

Fashion Inspirations

"I'm drawn to designers whose process feels like art and has a backstory,” Gia was recently quoted telling Vogue magazine, listing Proenza Schouler, Rodarte and friend Zac Posen as favorites. She doesn't let the labels wear her, though—if anything, the younger Coppola seems like that girl who walks into Forever21 and emerges looking like a Parisian model.

Her signature style and directorial prowess has already landed her lucrative gigs. She recently directed a short film for Opening Ceremony, a New York based multi-brand store and trend-setting giant, that featured an intoxicating mix of suburban haze, palm trees and lusty bike rides.

So basically, Gia is super-talented, smart, stunning, Hollywood royalty and a style siren. Sigh. For the Coppolas, it seems, making others envious runs in the family.
