We've been hearing about President Obama's evil plans to take away our guns for the last eight years and it's finally (finally!) coming true. Obama outlined his new gun control plan this morning and all I have to say is thanks, Obama. It's about goddamn time.
Contrary to the belief of right-wing conspiracy theorists, Obama's gun control plan is the bare minimum that should've been enacted decades ago. It closes gun show, private seller, and Internet gun sale loopholes and provides for hiring additional federal agents to process background checks. It also increases mental health funding. If you can pass a background check, you can still buy a gun, so simmer down about your "rights."
During his speech, Obama called for a national sense of urgency around gun violence and wiped away tears as he mentioned the children murdered in the Sandy Hook shooting. "Every time I think about those kids, it gets me mad," Obama said.
Obama called out pretty much everyone in his speech, including Congressional Republicans and the NRA, insisting that this isn't a plan to take away anyone's guns.
"Each time this comes up, we are fed the excuse that common-sense reforms like background checks might not have stopped the last massacre, or the one before that, or the one before that, so why bother trying?" Obama said. "I reject that thinking."
"We know we can't stop every act of violence, every act of evil in the world. But maybe we could try to stop one act of evil, one act of violence," he added.
