Lucille Corbit: Visual Merchandiser, American Apparel

Spotted: Downtown Seattle

What are you up to today?
I'm a visual merchandiser for American Apparel, so I'm working on clearing out some stuff — we're putting out a lot of items for Pride this week. We're going to a couple of events — we got to see Violet Chachki, who just won RuPaul's Drag Race, so we got to hand out goodie bags at events. That's mostly what we're doing today, and then I have the weekend off.

Any fun plans?
Going out with a couple of friends tonight to Cairo up on the hill. There's something going on there. Other than that, I'll be sleeping a lot!

How did you get into visual merchandising?
I've worked at American Apparel for a while, almost three years now, and I've always liked clothes. I'm also an artist, so it's a creative outlet as well.

Do you have any projects that you've working on?
I'm working on a series of portraits of my roommate. It's acrylic on found objects, so I do a different style of painting each time on something else that I find in the world.

Where are some of your favorite places to hang out in the area?
I've lived here my whole life, and my favorite place is the pier. I like to go to the waterfront and take some stuff down there — painting or writing — on the pier.

What's something that's caught your interest lately?
I'm moving to New York in a couple of months, so I've been re-reading New York novels. I've been reading a lot of Sylvia Plath and Fitzgerald to try and review New York in a different way, I guess! I'm a little iffy about it still, so I'm trying to build a foundation.

Seattle will miss you, Lucille!

I'm curious about Sylvia Plath's take on New York!
She definitely has more of a bleak outlook on it, but I think that it's more realistic in a lot of ways. A lot of New York novels just beautify it. She journeyed there from other places, versus people who grew up there. It's an interesting outlook.

Is there a recent challenge you've overcome lately?
I guess things have been pretty easy lately! My roommate and I recently worked out a system for taking out our garbage which I guess is a challenge! [laughs] We used to leave it for weeks and now we take it out every day when we go to work.

How would you describe your personal style?
I wear a lot of black. When I'm at work, obviously, I wear a lot of American Apparel. It's good because there are so many basics, and so many things that I don't look like I'm just wearing a piece of black cotton. It doesn't look as simple as it is, I guess. But mostly, a lot of black and a lot of linen. Especially for summer — I'm very into linen right now.
