Off The Cuff: Summer Shoe Options That Don’t Show Toes

While most people rejoice at the onset of flip flop season (or just wear flip flops year-round, frostbite be damned), there are tons of reasons others might be hesitant or unable to unveil their toes to the world.

Dear Winona,

I don’t want to get into specifics, but let’s just say my toes are gross, and I’d rather not have them exposed. What options do I have for summer shoes that won’t look out of season and can keep my feet relatively cool?

Sincerely,

Weird Toes

Dear Weird Toes (you said it, not me!),

You’re not alone. While most people rejoice at the onset of flip flop season (or just wear flip flops year-round, frostbite be damned), there are tons of reasons others might be hesitant or unable to unveil their toes to the world. From personal insecurity to medical issues to office dress codes, summer months don’t always translate to open-toe shoes. Here are a few summer shoe options that are stylish, comfortable, and seasonally appropriate –– all without showing any toe:

Espadrilles

Most espadrilles have a closed toe, but they still look undeniably summery. Plus they’re usually made out of light fabrics like cotton and canvas, keeping them cool and breathable. I’m currently obsessed with striped espadrilles with a fabric ankle tie like these from Splendid (SO CHIC –– don’t you want to wear them to wander around a Greek island?). For a more basic (and super affordable!) option, check out the solid color collection from Soludos. These lace flats are a fun mix of espadrille and slip-on sneaker. And check out these fun floral print ones if you’re looking to liven up a simple summer outfit.

D’orsay Flats

These are a great option for summer because they show a little skin –– enough to be flattering, sexy, and keep you relatively cool –– but they still keep your toes covered. Another amazing thing about this style? They might be the most versatile shoe ever to grace the planet. You can pair them with a sun dress or cuffed boyfriend jeans to run errands on a Saturday and look casual and cute –– or you can wear them to work on Monday with a skirt suit and look perfectly professional and polished. Look for a pair with a pointed toe that matches your skintone to make your legs look a mile long. These Steven Madden beauties are a great place to start. I’m also digging the preppy stripe on these.

Closed-Toe Huarache Sandals

These comfortable summer classics give you all the benefits of sandals without exposing your toes. They’re also perfectly aligned with the bohemian/music festival attendee/’70s art teacher aesthetic that is driving every single trend right now. Pair them with cutoff shorts, flowy maxi dresses, floral rompers, or just jeans and a tanktop. I’m loving the retro vibe of this pair –– plus they’re super comfortable!

Breathable Sneakers

Thanks to the current sportswear-as-all-the-time-wear trend (have I mentioned how much I love this trend? God, I love this trend.), I’m adding breathable sneakers into the mix of cute, everyday summer footwear options. Treat yourself to a pair of breathable sneakers that you can wear without socks (like Nike Frees), and rock those comfy athletic shoes with everything from skinny jeans to babydoll dresses to ruched mini skirts. I personally believe when it comes to sneakers, the brighter and more garish, the better (ahem). But you can’t go wrong with a simple black and white pair, either.
